Tribute to Bettie Page
I just finished this charcoal drawing. It was actually meant for the weekly Chow contest over at conceptart.org, but it somehow doesn't feel right to submit it there... (I still don't want to be that active in forums and such anyway :)
This is a tribute to Bettie Page, a famous pin-up model in the 40s and 50s. She died recently and I don't like the idea of this drawing being part of a competition...
Charcoal(vine charcoal and charcoal pencil) on paper, background tinted with watercolour. The pose is referenced from mirror and finished from imagination. The face is largely from imagination, only for the smile I looked up some photos of her. I'm not sure if it really looks like her, I simply stopped working on the face, when I liked the expression.

Sleeping
Charcoal is such a wonderful material. It's rough and soft and dark and messy. This is a little spontaneous sketch I made with charcoal and white chalk. The pose is inspired by a picture I've seen somewhere. As reference I used a mirror and my memory...

Fëanor
I did a lot of life drawing recently and I discovered, how much I really love charcoal... not just for nudes, also for portraits.
This is a portrait of a character from J.R.R.Tolkien's 'The Silmarillion'.
My first 'Fan Art' actually. This is Fëanor, an elf from the First Age, quite a ... well, one could say he's an interesting character ; ).
Charcoal on paper. The paper is tinted with watercolour. Text added in Photoshop.
A tiny bit of reference from life, but basically this is done from imagination ( I admit, for this one, I did a pencil sketch first... charcoal is not just great but also very messy )
Während der letzten Aktzeichen-Stunden hab ich gemerkt, wie sehr ich Kohle wirklich mag...nicht nur für Akte, sondern auch für Portraits.

Keine Referenz, bis auf kurze Überprüfung am lebenden Modell, ob alles am richtigen Platz ist. Hierfür habe ich auch vorab eine Bleistiftskizze gemacht... Kohle ist nämlich nicht nur toll, sondern schmiert auch ziemlich : )

Details
My paintings are actually quite large and the small images on my website lack all the little details. I especially love the texture of the paper, but unfortunately that gets completely lost when I prepare the images for the web. Therefore, I decided to show some close-ups here to give you at least a glimpse of how the originals look like. (More close-ups in one of my earlier posts)

By the Sea - progress
This is another watercolour painting. This time I took more pictures during the process.( It's a very large painting. I find it easier to check the overall layout and appearance of large paintings on the small display of my camera)
Hier ein weiteres Aquarellbild. Diesmal habe ich viel mehr Fotos während des Malprozesses gemacht. Bei großen Bildern finde ich es einfacher, das Layout und den Gesamteindruck des Bildes auf dem Display meiner Kamera zu überprüfen.

Here's the initial doodle. I wanted him to look very elvish but I later decided that it is too extreme on this first sketch.
Hier ist die erste Skizze. Ich fand ihn dann doch etwas zu elfisch. : )
'The Lovers' process
Here's a very short overview of my painting process. I usually start with a very rough, mostly spontaneous scribble.
From there, I develop the sketch a bit further until I like the overall pose and the layout.
When necessary ( almost always ) I make a few sketches from life to get the anatomy right ( A mirror and a husband are especially helpful for this : )
Then I transfer the whole thing onto my watercolour paper. I like to leave out a lot of detail in the beginning, because I really like to paint spontaneously.
This can easily end in ruining the whole thing, but that's also what makes the process interesting.
Hier ist ein kleiner Einblick in die Entstehung meiner Bilder. Ich fange meistens mit einer spontanen, sehr rohen Skizze an, die ich dann weiter entwickle, bis mir die Pose und das Layout gefallen.
Wenn es notwendig ist ( fast immer ) mache ich einige Skizzen vom lebenden Modell ( Ehemann und Spiegel sind dafür sehr hilfreich : )
Dann übertrage ich die Skizze auf mein Aquarellpapier. Ich übertrage nur das allernötigste und lasse viele Details einfach weg. So kann ich viel spontaner ans Malen gehen und viele Teile des Bildes entstehen intuitiv. Das kann natürlich sehr leicht schiefgehen ( Aquarell lässt sich nicht gut korrigieren), aber die Entstehung des Bildes ist dadurch auch viel interessanter und spannender.
